So we were asked by one of our larger clients to come up with a planting plan for an upcoming visit by Enda Kenny to their facility. Design a planting scheme for our Taoiseach? Why not?! I may not agree with all of his policies but to design a garden for the Prime Minister of Ireland is not something you do every day. The turnaround time on this project was quick but I’m very happy with the outcome.
The planting plan needed to have high impact on the day of his visit. I’m not a big fan of designing planting for a one day impact as often it can look terrible for the rest of the year, so I had to dig deep and come up with a solution that would give high impact on the day and also look good for the rest of the year.
I decided to go with a back drop of Nandina Domestic (common name Heavenly Bamboo). This evergreen plant turns reddish purple in Autumn-Winter and often retains its brilliant leaf colour all winter. Plants also produce clusters of white flowers followed by attractive bunches of red berries after a good summer. You cant go wrong with a plant like this. Other plants included Pieris japonica ‘Mountain Flame’ in full bloom, Libertia Goldfinger with its dazzling foliage and some sweeps of winter and summer heathers. Its a great time for heathers right now as the winter/spring varieties are in full flower and the summer heathers are starting to bud.
The focal points or the piesta resistance of the planting plan are the three Corkscrew Hazel trees accentuating the ground plane. These will remain focal points throughout the year with its sculptural contorted branches and its abundant catkin shows in early spring before the new foliage buds.
All plants were planted with a good helping of Multi-purpose compost and the acid loving plants with Ericaceous Compost. The beds were finished off with a nice layer of fine bark mulch.
