Bull Island in North Dublin was the first designated UNESCO Biosphere Reserve in Ireland. It places national and international importance because of the diversity of its flora and fauna. Its flora of Bull Island represent approximately half of the number of species recorded from all of County Dublin and approximately 30% of the flora of Ireland. The island is the only Irish example of an undisturbed sequence of habitats including: beach, fore dunes, mature dune ridges and slacks, grassland, saltmarsh and mudflats. This is partly attributable to preservation but mainly due to the island’s youth as Bull Island began to form as a mere sandspit as recently as 1800 and it is now over 5 km in length. It is believed that over 40,000 birds spend their winter on the island and it has become not only one of Dublin’s most treasured tourist attractions but a paradise for bird watches.
The beach is always windy and attracts kite surfers from all over the world.
However, the island so much loved has to fight with waste either illegally dumped or left behind by walkers and dog owners. With its location so close to the port, the beach and dunes are also littered with items thrown overboard and into the sea. Each time there is a high-tide, the landscape is covered with more unwanted items, causing an hazardous danger to visitors and wildlife.
We wanted to help and joined the monthly Bull-Island Clean-Up! Every third Saturday of the month, a group of locals meet up to collect rubbish on the beach and dunes. Organised by the Bull Island Action Group, local volunteers clean up the amenities for now over ten years. Armed with pickets, bin bags and gloves we made our way through the dunes and managed to fill bags of rubbish.
We were astonished what we found, not only an enormous amount of unwanted plastic bags and cups but bottles, toys, cans, and tyres – you name it, it was there. The work was exhausting but exhilarating. The sun was shinning and a fresh breeze was blowing from the sea, we felt good about contributing to our local community and a competition broke out who could gathered the most amount of rubbish.
We will be back but thanks to the Bull Island Action Group!
