We're in the thick of the winter at this stage and you may think there is little to be doing outside but this is not the case. Remember those famous words; fail to prepare, prepare to fail! The cold of winter can make life hard for most of out garden birds, such as Sparrows, Wrens, Robins and Blackbirds. As temperatures drop, birds need to eat as much high energy foods as possible to try and keep warm. By December many of the berries will be eaten already and there won't be very many insects around. Instead birds have to make do with searching the ground for whatever seeds and scraps they can but even this becomes impossible when it begins to snow. Here at Grasshopper Landscape Maintenance we are encouraging the public to help feed grden birds during the winter. Wild bird seed, peanuts and sunflower seeds are readily available from most shops. Just make sure they are from a certified source. Remember to keep the peanut holders clean and do not let the peanuts mould as this would poison the bird if they ate them. Once you start providing food for garden birds you must continue for the whole of the winter. Birds will become dependent on this food source and if was to suddenly disappear, they will struggle to survive. News Grasshopper Landscape Maintenance welcomes one of Ireland's leading landscape architects Colin Cooney. Colin worked at establishments such as Murray & Associates and Cunnane Stratton Reyonlds. In 2001 Colin was awarded full member of the ILI (Irish Landscape Institute), following completion of the Professional Practice exams.He has vast experience in all aspects of landscape design and project management from large parkland projects to contemporary urban gardens. His strong design flair and problem solving skills allow Colin to adapt to any design situation, while keeping the needs of the client as top priority. Last year Colin was involved in the preparation drawings for Diarmuid Gavin’s Gold medal winning “ Irish Sky Garden” at the Chelsea Flower Show 2011. He is now in the process of preparing drawings for Diarmuid’s 2012 Chelsea Garden.
